Byron Yasui
Byron Yasui is primarily a music educator (University of Hawai'i) and composer, but is also a concert level performer on three instruments: jazz double bass, classical guitar, and 'ukulele. As an 'ukuleleist, he became active as a concert artist and clinician since 1998 at such venues as the 'Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum Expositions (east coast), the Santa Cruz Ukefest (California), the Augusta Heritage Center Swing Week (West Virginia), Mike DaSilva's 'Ukulele Workshop (San Francisco), the Aloha Music Camp (Moloka'i), 'Ukulele Guild of Hawai'i conventions, and the Midwest 'Ukefest (Indianapolis).
He was a featured 'ukulele soloist in two Hawai'i Public Television specials ('Ukulele Madness and The Art of Solo 'Ukulele) and he provided 'ukulele playing on the sound tracks of three indie films, Waikiki, Journey of Honor, and To You Sweetheart, Aloha (video-documentary on Bill Tapia, on which he also served as a major consultant). He was also interviewed and played an 'ukulele solo on a documentary film on the Kamaka 'ukulele making family. As a recording artist, his 'ukulele and/or double bass playing can be heard on several CDs, including The Art of Solo 'Ukulele, 'Ukulele Summit 7 (music of the BeeGees), The Duke of 'Uke (Bill Tapia), and Na'u 'Oe. He is currently completing two CDs that feature his performances on 'ukulele and double bass (and also classical guitar on one of them).
